Verdant

The name conjures fields of lush grasses and the rolling hills of the countryside. An unlikely title inspired by the trees of Los Angeles, but I’m compelled to find beauty and nature in surprising places. 

For this series of work, I focused on the tops of the trees and their network of branches. I wanted to evoke the feeling of getting lost in the tangle and the interplay of light as it travels through the tree limbs. Moreover, I imagined the changes that happen in the tree tops over the course of a day. The urban haze in the morning, followed by changes in light and shadow from the sun and street lamps, all work to inform color, texture, and detail. By increasing the magnification and scale, these paintings are glimpses into a forest. A space that captures your eye and gives you a wild place to escape.
